SHOT BLASTING

Shot blasting is the recommended process to achieve the required rough profile for the installation of cementitious urethane and epoxy floor coating systems, concrete and self-leveling systems, and Methyl Methacrylic (MMA) systems. It will quickly and efficiently remove existing floor coatings, floor paint, line markings, and residual glue and adhesives left from other floorings.

Concrete Solutions Inc’s years of experience will guarantee an excellent result.

Shot blasting can be explained as a concrete surface preparation process using steel shot of varying sizes propelled downward at very high velocity to produce a clean and profiled surface so that any additional flooring treatment will bond well with the concrete substrate. This steel shot is then recaptured by the shot blast machine, recycled, and used again in the same installation. There are different sizes of shot used, depending on the desired result.  Used mainly in industrial and commercial locations, shot blasting can properly prepare up to 10,000 sq. ft per day in large, wide-open areas. Shot blasting can also be used to roughen a concrete substrate to create slip resistance in wet or unsafe environments.

Shot blasting is the recommended process to achieve the required Concrete Surface profile of CSP for the installation of cementitious urethane and epoxy floor coating systems, concrete and self-leveling systems, and Methyl Methacrylic (MMA) systems. It is also an effective means by which to remove existing floor coatings, floor paint, line markings, and residual glue and adhesives left from another flooring. Shot blasting can be utilized to roughen a concrete substrate to create slip resistance in wet or unsafe environments. Shot blasting is an effective method to prepare and clean and upgrade any concrete substrate in any facility. It is quick and produces little to no dust. In fact, shot blasting can properly prepare up to 10,000 sq. ft per day in large, wide-open areas. Industrial vacuums with HEPA filters run concurrently with the shot blaster ensuring a clean and safe process. CSI owns and operates a number of shot blast machines supplied by Blastrac, North America’s leading manufacturer shot blasting equipment and tooling manufacturer.

Self-leveling materials are divided into two main groups – overlayments and underlayments.

Overlayments, or toppings as they are sometimes referred, can be dyed, stained, and polished, producing an infinite number of finishes. New and improved overlayment products will accept aggregate broadcast applications for a unique finished floor aesthetic. Overlayments are designed to be a finished and usable floor.

Underlayments are installed to provide a smooth and flat surface for the installation of another flooring such as tile, epoxy coatings, hardwood, and sheet flooring goods. They can typically be walked on within 3 hours and new flooring can be installed within 24-48 hours, thus shortening construction timelines and schedules. Your existing facility may have a floor which over time has become worn, or you are taking over a new office or retail space where the existing floor is just too damaged to install new flooring. Self-levelers can be the answer for you.

CSI has long-standing relationships and successful installation track records with North America’s leading manufacturers of self-leveling materials including Mapei, Ardex, Sika, Custom Cements, CTS Rapid Set, and many others. Our installation teams are certified by each individual manufacturer and further participate in regular online and in house training programs to keep up to date with new products and installation techniques.

CSI has completed numerous industrial, institutional, and warehouse projects where tight floor tolerances were imperative for equipment and machinery to function properly. Prior to the installation of self-leveling products, a moisture mitigation system is installed if there is moisture vapor or high relative humidity levels present in the substrate. Our team of professionals will assess your project and make recommendations based on our findings to ensure a successful installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do shot blasters create a lot of dust?

No – the shot blasters are connected to large industrial vacuums with HEPA filters ensuring a clean and safe process. Concrete Solutions complies with all Health and Safety regulations regarding dust-producing processes.

Can you use a shot blaster as the floor preparation for a thin film coating?

Shot blasting as an aggressive form of floor preparation will create lines or a blast pattern on the floor that may not be covered or hidden by a thin film epoxy floor coating. If aesthetics is not a consideration shot blasting could be employed, but for thin-film coatings, a diamond grinder with aggressive diamond tooling will produce better results. Shot blasting is typically recommended for thicker flooring systems and applications.

Can you shot blast over rough concrete?

Before shot blasting on a rough surface, we would recommend a mockup be completed for optimum performance and results. With extremely rough concrete the machine may not be able to maintain contact with the floor and the metal shot could be thrown from the machine.

What is the difference between Diamond Grinding and Shot Blasting?

Diamond grinding uses grit sanding discs producing a cleaner smoother surface. Shot blasting opens pores in the substrate allowing liquids to soak into the concrete for a better bonding surface.  The thickness of the coating to be installed will determine which preparation method will be used.

Using our shot blast machines supplied by Blastrac, North America’s leading manufacturer of shot blasting equipment means you can be confident choosing Concrete Solutions as your contractor for superior results.

Shot blasting is a more aggressive treatment using small steel balls propelled at extremely high velocity to profile a concrete floor.  It can remove up to 2-3 mm of existing concrete.

It is an excellent solution for preparing extremely pitted or grooved concrete floors.
